Jose & Marta are getting married July 11th, 2015

"We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird.
And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours,
we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness
—and call it love—true love."
- Robert Fulghum, True Love

Groomsmen

Brenda VasquezBest Person

There would be no Marta and I if it were not for Brenda. She did not introduce us, but she is the reason that I became the person I am today. If it were not for Brenda’s influence on me, I am pretty sure I would be undateable. She is the person who taught me how to express myself; how to talk to girls; hell, she taught me how to shave—even though I’m pretty sure she was just making it up as she went along. She is the older sister that I never had, the person who taught me that if there is no path then you should just make one for yourself. She took me in my first Mosh pit, introduced me to some of my favorite music, and will always be someone whose advice I will always take to heart.

Rene GranoGroomsman, Cousin of the Groom

Rene is my cousin, and honestly the younger, cooler version of me. We used to play in his back yard as kids and chase each other around his pool before going back up to his room to play Super Nintendo for hours on end. I have watched this guy go from a nerdy kid who used to play the accordion to a guitar wizard who’s talent is without question. We spend much of our time now watching TV, quoting the movie Blood In, Blood Out, and playing board games in his garage. This guy is the closest to a brother I will ever have, and I am honored to be his cousin.

Steve CrawfordGroomsman

Imagine, if you will, me at 14 standing outside of gym class on a number, so that the gym teacher didn’t have to learn my name. Now imagine Steve at 14 standing 10 feet in front of me. Now visualize a small Metallica patch on his backpack and me saying something to the effect of "Dude, Metallica rules." This small statement started a friendship that has been going strong ever since. We’ve been in bands together; started fires together; hell, I took this guy to his first concert. Steve and I share a, lets say, odd sense of humor and can often be found texting jokes that make sense to only us. I am honored to have him beside me on my big day.

SivaShankar "Shankar" KrishnakumarGroomsman

I met Shankar in summer school after my junior year of high school, along with Mike. We bonded over our love of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, as well as an appreciation for the finer things in life—namely DnD and Tupac. We used to take my 1994 Beige Camry—which we nicknamed the "Battle Camry"—to McDonalds on our breaks, where he would get a soda, since the guy’s a vegetarian. Like all my friends, we share a sense of humor that only makes sense to us, and despite being my friend for so long, the guy has a good head on his shoulders; just don’t expect him to show up anywhere on time.

Mike CastleGroomsman

I’m just going to say it, Mike’s an odd duck and one of my best friends. One time, he waited with a group of us, from about 6 to midnight, while we were in line to see Star Wars and left right before the movie saying, "I’m no nerd, just call me when the movie’s over." I met him on the same day as Shankar and the reality is, I wish I could be more like this guy. I have never met anyone who is as cool under pressure as mike. NOTHING phases this guy and I mean nothing. We have spent many a night just driving around listening to music and talking about classic 80’s movies. Mike is the kind of guy who is always their for you no matter what. Brothers ’til the end.

Kevin MillerGroomsman

Kevin and I share a love of the 1980’s era action movie. We went to high school together, but did not really rekindle our bromance until we both worked at sears in Pasadena. When Marta and I started dating, he was thrilled that two of his best friends were dating. Beyond our love of movie choice, Kevin and I also share an affinity for Heavy Metal and toy collecting, which drives our significant others crazy, but I guess that’s why we get along so well. Kevin is a man’s man and the kind of guy I aspire to be.

Elias BourjeiliGroomsman, Brother of the Bride

At some point in the future, Marta and I are going to have children and I am already jealous of them. Not because they will have an awesome father—with an extensive toy collection—but because they will have an uncle as cool as Elias. I have never met anyone who is as cool as my future brother-in-law. He is the kind of guy who can build you a house, then fly you to that house, and then set up a killer light show and sound system, all because he can; and all with a humility that I have never seen in any other person. He is wise beyond his years, and an amazing person.

Bridesmaids

Aaron LoomisMan of Honor

Aaron was unlucky enough to be stuck with me as a neighbor. And I say unlucky, because I’m pretty sure when we met, he wanted nothing to do with the crazy lady next door. I wore him down eventually, and he helped me navigate those first few years as a teacher. Aaron has always been there to listen and offer support, and has helped guide me through some of life’s most difficult moments. We still go to each other for help, and I know that I can always be completely honest with him, and that he won’t judge me, but accept what I have to say, and give an honest response.

Lisa YuBridesmaid

Neighbors and schoolmates from elementary school—Lisa and I were silly enough not to even know each other—oddly enough, we didn’t even have one class together in 12 years! But it was meant to be, because Lisa started working at Oak Avenue in 2011 and our lives changed for the better! We have been inseparable ever since, and have had the privilege of being there for each other’s big life moments, from the day Jose and I were engaged, to the day she and Jimmy were married! From work fun to life’s craziness, we will always be there for each other.

Rana LtiefBridesmaid, Cousin of the Bride

Rana is silly enough to live in Lebanon. But that hasn’t ever stopped us from being as close as family can be. In every trip I’ve made to Lebanon, or trip she’s made to the U.S., we have managed to catch up effortlessly, and get along like only the best of friends could. Regardless of whether or not we’re traveling together, or just face timing, Rana just gets me—and I’ll always be there to try to push her out of her comfort zone! I am so honored and happy she’s able to fly all the way here for the wedding!

Marie Jose SalemBridesmaid, Cousin of the Bride

This little girl is my mini me! From the day she was born, everyone we know has claimed that she is the spitting image of me. She shares my crazy, over-achieving nature; fashion sense; and my tendency to speak my mind, even if it gets me in trouble. My favorite memory is of traveling to Lebanon when she was just a little girl, and having her follow me everywhere, asking to have her hair done just like mine, and to buy outfits that matched whatever I happened to be wearing. I am beyond grateful and excited that she will be joining us for this exciting event!

Sara BudisantosoBridesmaid

I was fortunate to meet Sara in September of 2006. Later when bonding over our love for baking, Sara, Elaine, and I decided to start our own little bakery called Cake Your Heart Out, where we spent months together making Cake Pops. And while they always tell you not to go into business with your friends, this business only made us closer. While we ended up letting go of the company, we never let go of each other. Since then we’ve managed to become the best of friends, fall in love with each others’ families, and attend every event just like the sisters we tell everyone we are!

Elaine FrancoBridesmaid

It was Halloween, in 2007, and Elaine was impeccably dressed up as Lucille Ball. Thankfully I was introduced to her through our friend, and her now husband, Marcus—otherwise she would have been very confused when a complete stranger went over to her, to gush about how amazing her costume was! Over the years, we bonded over everything from crafting to shopping to food, even starting a sadly short-lived bakery together called Cake Your Heart Out! In the last 7 years, every big life decision has involved input from Elaine, and I wouldn’t know what to do without her, or her adorable beautiful baby girl Olivia.

Clarissa MendietaBridesmaid, Cousin of the Groom

Jose has known Clarissa since she was born, and has been able to watch her grow up into such a remarkable young lady. Clarrisa shares the greatest attributes with both Jose and I—our love for all things geeky. Traveling to Comic Con together, or just spending hours talking about Doctor Who, there are always good times to be had when Clarrisa is around. If you happen to find Clarissa hanging about, ask her about her crazy talent involving hula hoops.
